Steps to prevent a work-related back injury:
Use good posture: Balance your weight on your feet in an even way, especially if you’re an employee who spends a lot of time standing on the job. Also, maintain erect posture when you’re sitting and use a chair that offers spinal curve and lumbar support. Both your feet should be able to rest against the floor when you’re sitting. If they can’t, use a footstool. Make sure your wallet and cellphone are not in your back pocket when you’re seated.
Lift carefully: If you have to pick up a heavy object, use your legs to lift it and lift from the core of your body, not with your back. Keep a natural curve in your back when you’re lifting and don’t twist. Never lift an object that you’re worried could be too heavy.
Modify any repetitive tasks for variety: Repetitive tasks, done over and over again, can result in strain and injury. Try changing your position while working at a computer all day long. Trade out strenuous tasks with less demanding tasks throughout the day. Don’t spend long periods of time lugging heavy objects like briefcases, bags or equipment when you don’t have to.
Pay attention to what your body is telling you: When things go wrong, your body will usually complain in a subtle way. Listen to those little pains and attend to them before they become serious injuries.
