Stem cell therapy shows promise for those with brain injuries
Too often, when a person suffers a serious brain injury while on the job, his life can change forever. Although many injuries can be devastating, brain injuries can be particularly challenging because they require individuals to overcome significant physical and cognitive hurdles. What is worse, in some cases, the effects of these sorts of injuries may be permanent. Recently, researchers announced that they had made a breakthrough in using stem cell therapy to help those who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. The new therapy not only reduces swelling in the brain immediately following injury, but also improves the chances of cognitive recovery later on. The development of this therapy is important because doctors currently have few pharmaceutical tools at their disposal to help combat damage in the critical hours after a brain injury. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston studied the use of a technique known as multipotent adult progenitor cell therapy in mice. Although others had proven that MPAC therapy is useful in treating patients who have suffered a traumatic brain injury, this study, which was published in the journal STEM CELLS Translational Medicine, is the first to examine the impact of the technique on individuals over time. As part of the study, the team injected two groups of mice, all of which had suffered brain injuries, with stem cells immediately following injury and then again one day later. One group received a stronger dose than the other group. After four months, the team noted that the mice that had received the stronger dose not only had less inflammation, but also were making significant progress in regaining normal cognitive function. The study suggests that MPAC injections may one day be a standard treatment for patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. Over the past few years, multiple studies have demonstrated the importance of controlling inflammation when it comes to treating traumatic brain injuries, particularly for improving the possibility of recovery later on. Adding another option for doctors to use to help patients is essential to ensuring that people can return to their daily lives as quickly as possible.
