Worker in serious condition after fall from bridge

An injured worker was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he was reported to be in serious condition after falling from the bridge he was painting on March 10. The man was working on the framework underneath the middle of the Dawsonville Highway Bridge late in the afternoon when he apparently lost his footing and fell 12 feet.

There was a safety net set up to help protect those who were working underneath the bridge. The net caught the 29-year-old man when he fell. However, according to a spokesman for the Gainesville Fire Division, the worker still suffered "some head injuries and injuries to his chest" when he struck the bridge's metal framework.

The man was removed from the location where he landed under the westbound side of the bridge by fire crews from Gainesville as well as Hall County Fire and Rescue and emergency medical services personnel. They used a high angle rope rescue and a tower truck. The man was loaded into a stokes basket, placed on the eastbound side of the bridge and then transported by ambulance to the hospital.

It was not reported whether all proper safety precautions were being taken to help protect this man and other workers on the bridge from falls. Clearly the safety net alone was not enough to prevent this worker from sustaining serious injuries. People who are injured in workplace accidents can and should determine what their legal options are to make sure that they get the compensation they need to heal and to support their families until they can return to work.
