Work accident kills Georgia Pacific Cedar Springs mill employee

A worker at the Georgia Pacific Cedar Springs mill died from injuries she sustained during an accident at the mill Oct 16. The only detail released by the mill's public affairs manager about the workplace injury and death was that the injured worker was a 39-year-old woman. The manager wen on to say that no further information would be provided while an investigation into the possible cause of the fatal accident was under way. Containerboard is produced at the Early County mill.

A public affairs manager said that the Georgia Pacific Cedar Springs mill and its employees remained committed to a safe workplace and were working with a team from the Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration to discover all the facts related to the tragic incident.

This was not the first fatality reported at the Cedar Springs facility. In 2003, a worker was killed while clearing paper out of an operating conveyor. An OSHA investigation determined that the employee fell onto the conveyor belt and was subsequently thrown into a fully operating beater pit, where paper was in the process of being shredded. In that case, OSHA recommended that the company be fined $102,000. In 2006, a worker standing on a catwalk to serve as a fire watchman during a welding operation was killed when he fell 30 feet following a discharge of steam and paper stock. That incident brought a recommended fine of $63,000 from OSHA.

Industrial workers' accidents can maim when they don't outright kill an employee. Workers who have been hurt in industrial accidents might find it helpful to consult a Georgia attorney who has experience in litigation following an on-the-job injury. An attorney may be able to assist in the negotiation of financial compensation for damages.
