Georgia company facing OSHA fines

A Marietta company that provides architectural millwork and turnkey framing services has been fined $42,120 for several alleged health and safety violations. The agency began its inspection of the company in April as part of a targeting program that focuses resources on workplaces that have an above-average rate of illnesses and injuries.

OSHA allegedly reported nine serious health and safety violations. The allegations include charges related to failures to train employees properly on the hazards associated with combustible dust and the proper use of a fire extinguisher as well as the hazards associated with noises louder than permissible limits. The charges also included alleged violations related to workplace safety, including the failure to ensure that grounding and bonding was maintained on the dust collector and duct work; failure to provide appropriate eye protection for employees with prescription glasses; failure to prevent exposure to slip hazards; and other violations. Employers are required to provide a safe workplace for employees in order to minimize the risk of a workplace accident.

When someone is injured on the job, his or her life may be turned upside-down both physically and financially. While the injured person is recuperating, it may not be possible to return to work, and there might also be significant medical bills. In some cases, employers and their insurance carriers make a low offer to an injured employee that will not cover all injury-related expenses.

A personal injury attorney might be able to secure a fair settlement on behalf of an injured worker through a claim. The resources, experience and knowledge that an attorney has may enable him or her to negotiate successfully with the employer and insurance companies. If the negotiations do not conclude satisfactorily, the attorney might suggest a civil court trial.
