Types Of Benefits

Most people know that the Social Security Administration provides financial benefits to individuals who are unable to work as a result of a long-term illness or disability. However, some may not be familiar with the two distinct programs offered by Social Security.

At Tillman & Associates in Atlanta, Georgia, we are experienced attorneys with a strong record of helping our clients secure Social Security benefits when they can no longer work. We will help you evaluate your disability, determine which program is right for you and strengthen your application for benefits.

What Type Of Disability Benefits Am I Eligible For?

There are two types of Social Security benefits for people with disabilities:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) — SSDI is for people who have worked and paid into Social Security for a certain number of years. SSDI benefits may also be available to certain family members of the disabled individual.
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) — SSI pays weekly benefits to disabled individuals based on their financial need.

Either a lawyer or the Social Security Administration can help you determine which program is appropriate for you. While there are several key differences between Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income, both are administered by the Social Security Administration and have similar qualifications requiring that applicants have a legitimate disability and meet certain medical criteria.
